How many of you here in THE STATES, are gonna start selling off all your "Gas guzzlers", to get into some other kind of hobby?

Just wondering how many will stick it out, and how many will sell off and get out....IS Hot rodding over? Fuel has NEVER been more expensive in the states, where hot rodding is REALLY a way of life...
Are the V8's days numbered in favor of a V6? 4 cyl.?

Is the very back bone of hot rodding gonna be a footnote in the legacy of Hot rodding?

Will the 350 SBC's and the 426 HEMI's, be sold off for peanuts to get rid of overstock, never to ever return?

Just wondering how many are thinking bout this like I am..(Worrying)... Confused

I'm not getting out, but I'm thinning the herd.

With three old cars now, I really want to get rid of the truck. I want to keep just my 57 and Angie's RS/SS Camaro. Those are the two we really love.

I'm not jumping out of the hobby. But I must admit that I have not driven the old cars in about a month.

Not yet Chaney, we have been driving a whole lot less and economizing everywhere to cut costs.
In a way, I understand the depression era generation . You've got to do what you've got to do to survive.

The casual car collectors will most likely leave the hobby, but for those that are lifetime car nuts and hobbyists it won't happen. If it means putting food on the table or going to a cruise-in, the food will always come first, but it won't neccessarily mean the car will be sold. ---John

Hot Rodding and American cars have survived worse around 73/74. When you look at the way gas went up then and compare the rate of inflation for the time to today it's not that much different.

People were then giving away there muscle cars in favor of pinto's and mustang II's then but even with rising prices those same give away cars came back.
We American are a hard headed bunch. While we as collectors, builders, hobbyists' are the minority in the automotive world we will once again stan the test of time and change.

I've got the hope that good ol' America shall pull through. It maybe a little lean, but we're a scrappy bunch, and we WILL overcome our current politics to survive... Twisted Evil

By the way, Diesel is NOT the way to go. What is cheaper to produce is now about $1 more a gallon than gasoline here in the jungle. Sux.

Hopefully most people will do the same as we've had to since the gas has gone through the roof - if you love your car enough you'll sacrifice other things for it. I 've had to cut down on drinking, don't smoke (never did but certainly couldn't afford to start), drive a ten year old daily and haven't had a foreign holiday for as long as I can remember. But - my car's progressing after three years of inactivity, so all the above's well worth it.

Im not selling my ride.... as much as I hate paying $4 plus a gallon I can afford the local car shows and cruise in's I goto.... as for new production cars the V-8's days are numbered.....the high gas will kill off the new Challenger and Camaro..... extremely bad timing for those 2 cars..... Im into the old cars and will never change to a different hobby.....

My Plymouth stays....even if it is doomed to stay put!!!

I'd rather build an LCD projector mock up "drive-in theater" in my garage and watch movies from the car than sell her. 20+years of wanting and dreaming will not be killed by expensive gas. It's more than having a movie car, I appreciate the history of old cars. I've been around old cars and old car shows long before I had short curlies. Gas prices won't endanger my Belvy, but my F150 might get a little lonely soon.

I've done 1000 miles in my SRT-10 already and realistically
it costs me $1 a mile.

This is actually better than what my '59 Caddy coupe acheived so it is ok.

It is the most un-green car available so I love it.

I still like red meat Laughing

Unfortunately, Gen. Grant, the cars themselves are endangered here, as scrap prices are at an all time high. I can't bring myself to drive by the crusher now, seeing what's lined up to go. Unless demand takes a really sharp curve, supply seems to be dwindling, meaning ultimately higher prices.

My wife and I have just played a good hand at our bill's and had some lucky breaks like the price we bought our place for.
We drive an 87 Saab to work (35 mpg) with 220,000 miles on it. My truck is a rusty 91 F-250 that usedto be a Jersey snow plow.

You're not kidding, Pete. The place I bought the Buicks [and some other cars] from called me asking if I wanted any of the cars, as he was going to crush everything on his lot. #2 scrap [car bodies] is bringing close to $400/ton at the port of Oakland, so a 2-ton car brings $800.00! We see scrap hauling rigs going down the freeway on a regular basis, the local ranchers are having scrappers come in and cut up old farm equipment, cars, anything of steel! I have even seen some old dumps get dug out in order to cash in on steel items buried there. We've even got Mexican guys driving around in old pickup trucks asking if you want to sell your scrap metal, and they are making good money at it, despite high fuel prices.

You've got to admit though, sometimes it's awfully tempting for folks to sell their car directly to a scrapper, they can get close to the same price and not have to deal with tire kickers and lowballers. Parts cars have now become an endangered species, so if anyone here has been eyeballing a car out in a field or in a barn, the time is now to act on it, because the scrap guys are closing in.

If I was so inclined, I could get $500,000 or more if I was to scrap these old cars and equipment, but what the hell would I do after that? ---John

Thanks, Chaney, it's statements like yours that keep the fire lit under me. Some folks think it's all fun and games, but in reality, there is a lot to do. All levels of government are constantly making it harder to run a dismantling business. ---John

Round here in VA, if you got a "Grandfather'd" Auto dismantler yard, you give up that license, you don't get another one EVER!

The EPA has cracked down so hard, that NO NEW YARDS here....

I was so sad to see the one that I bought my last 4dr from go under, but the lady(Widow), ask'd if anybody wanted it for one lump sum, NOBODY offered...OH, they all bitched that it was going out of business, but nobody wanted to buy it....ALOT of good cars went to the crusher....Like 200 Cars.....

I drive it less but sell it? I don't care how high gas is, I will still drive my plymouth, just a little less often. One thing I am considering is de tuning it a little and putting her back stock. That 301 2 barrel actually got pretty good mileage before I put a cam and 4 barrel on it!
And I am about to buy a honda fit for my daily driver. It's my work truck thats killin me but I have no choice. I pay a grand a month for fuel and that has really eaten into profits. But with new housing the way it is I can't complain too much, there are plenty of Mexicans who are willing to do my job for less pay.
Not a good time to be a construction guy...

You give a good example of how the EPA will crack down on salvage yards, yet allow large corporations continue to pollute in outrageous degrees by giving them pollution credits by enticeing car owners to junk there cars for $700.00 (Calif) so they can continue their own dirty work.

I filled the SRT to the brim last week and squeezed £104 ($208) into the tank and it wasn't empty.

Some of the guys I know are building 4 cylinder rods as the answer.
That seems like having sex with a johnny on to me.

LPG seems to be the answer over here but at $6000 to convert the SRT, it won't be my answer.

A do it yourself LPG carb kit is available for around £800 for the older cars.

However, no matter how it goes...... I still won't be buying a 1 litre Diesel anytime soon.

During the last months, Diesel fuel has become expensive too!
Sometimes it's even more expensive than regular gas...

A few years back, that was the case herre in the US, however, our greedy oil conglomerates saw when to guoge us when they saw consumption rising.
